Updated: Police Arrest Arson Suspect

San Rafael police arrested 38-year-old Hope Windom on suspicion of arson.

San Rafael police officers arrested a San Rafael woman suspected of causing two brush fires near Falkirk Mansion earlier today.

Hope Windom, 38, was arrested after she came in to the San Rafael police station to talk about the fires. She seemed to be involved in the incident, Sgt. Mike Vergara told reporters.

At approximately 1 p.m., firefighters responded to a blaze on San Rafael Hill. Firefighters found the fire near a homeless encampment and were able to limit its spread to any structures, Gray said.

A second fire, discovered in the same area at 2 p.m., spread over an acre and threatened homes on the hillside, Gray said. Approximately 30 firefighters were able to contain the blaze by 3 p.m.

No injuries or damage to buildings occurred, according to Gray.

Gray also urged residents to be aware of the vegetation around their homes that could be a fire hazard.

“When the dry vegetation is combined with higher temperatures, lower humidity and wind...it creates a serious fire threat,” he said.
