Investigation Continues Into Threats Made Against San Rafael High
The student will remain in custody until the case is processed, Superintendent Jim Hogeboom said.
SAN RAFAEL, CA — Police determined that a student who was arrested on suspicion of making threats against San Rafael High School was acting alone and did not have access to firearms, school officials confirmed.
Police arrested a boy Monday evening after concerned citizens and parents reported the online threats Monday afternoon. The threats were made for Wednesday and Nov. 25 on Instagram and YouTube, San Rafael police Sgt. Justin Graham said.
Detectives contacted the high school, the San Rafael City Schools district and the social media companies and were able to determine the owner of the accounts, Graham said.

"The threats were vague in nature," Graham said. "No other school was named in the threats."
The boy was arrested and booked into Marin County Juvenile Hall.

Police did not release the boy's name, age or grade. However, in an email Wednesday to the school community, Superintendent Jim Hogeboom confirmed the boy attended San Rafael High School.
"Today, the San Rafael Police Department shared that their close review of evidence strongly supports that the suspect arrested on Monday was acting alone," Hogeboom said. "The police have determined that the suspect was not in possession of nor had access to firearms."
The student will remain in custody until the case is processed, Hogeboom said. The school and school district, he said, will continue to work with police on the "next steps."
"School discipline matters are confidential, but we want to emphasize that the student will face appropriate consequences," Hogeboom said.
"We will follow our disciplinary guidelines under the education code. In making any decision, we consider the nature of the act, the impact upon the community and the danger posed to the safety of students and staff."
San Rafael High School planned to continue to have heightened security Thursday at the campus. The school is also scheduling a forum for parents and community members to share and discuss current practices related to school safety, Hogeboom said.
Anyone with information about the case was asked to call San Rafael police at 415-485-3000 or leave information at www.srpd.org/tips.
