Marin Opens Overflow Shelter For North Bay Fire Evacuees

A temporary overflow shelter is open at Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael. Two Novato churches have also opened their doors.

MARIN COUNTY, CA – Marin County has opened a temporary shelter to help support the estimated thousands of people who have been evacuated due to multiple fires burning in Napa and Sonoma counties.

A temporary overflow shelter is open at Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium, located at 10 Ave. of the Flags in San Rafael, according to county officials. The site will serve as an overflow shelter for fire evacuees, with capacity up to 2,000 people. Small pets are welcome. No cots or sleeping quarters are available.

Two churches in Novato have also opened their doors to evacuees. Novato United Methodist Church at 1473 S. Novato Boulevard and Lighthouse Christian Church at 1915 Novato Boulevard have opened as temporary shelters.

Marin Humane is also offering emergency boarding for pets for people who have evacuated to Marin.

There are currently no areas of Marin County under evacuation orders, but residents are urged to stay off roads and highways as much as possible to help first responders get to destinations where help is needed.

Marin County firefighters are in the Sonoma County community of Glen Ellen helping other firefighters on the Nuns Complex Fire.
