PG&E Power Shutoff Day 2: Outages, School Closures In Marin
Thousands of Marin County residents remain in the dark Thursday as PG&E continued the second phase of its Public Safety Planned Shutoffs.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Thousands of Marin County residents remain in the dark Thursday as Pacific Gas and Electric Company continued the second phase of its Public Safety Planned Shutoffs amid a forecast of extreme weather and fire conditions.
PG&E initially announced nearly 800,000 customers in Northern and Central California would be affected by the power shutoffs, which were based on forecasts of dry, hot and windy weather including potential fire risk.
The utility company started shutting off power just after midnight Wednesday to customers in the North Bay – including in Marin County – and in a separate portion of the Sierra Foothills. The first phase of power shutoffs reportedly impacted about 513,000 customers, according to PG&E.

Approximately 9,855 customers in Marin were warned they could lose power. The impacted areas included Bolinas, Fairfax, Mill Valley, Muir Beach, Olema, Sausalito and Stinson Beach.
As of Thursday morning, more than 4,000 customers had no power in Marin, according to PG&E outage map:

- 853 customers in Bolinas
- 8 customers in Fairfax
- 243 customers in Mill Valley
- 2,432 customers in Sausalito
- 518 customers in Stinson Beach
PG&E continued its second phase of outages late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in the Bay Area and Sierra Foothills, which reportedly affect about 234,000 customers.
A third phase is being considered for portions of Kern County that could impact about 4,000 customers.
Closures
The following schools in Marin remained closed Thursday due to the shutoffs:
- Bolinas School and Stinson Beach School in the Bolinas-Stinson Union School District
- Tam Valley School in Mill Valley School District
- Tamalpais High School in Tamalpais Union High School District
- Mount Tamalpais School (private school)
The Marin Headlands Visitor Center, Muir Woods National Monument, Muir Beach and Overlook, and Stinson Beach remained closed Thursday, according to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito reopened Thursday.
Safety Resources
PG&E offered the following preparedness tips to customers:
- Update contact information at pge.com/mywildfirealerts or by calling 866-743- 6589 during normal business hours. PG&E will use this information to alert customers through automated calls, texts and emails.
- Plan for medical needs like medications that require refrigeration or devices that need power.
- Identify backup charging methods for phones and keep hard copies of emergency contacts.
- Build or restock emergency kits with flashlights, fresh batteries, first aid supplies and cash.
- Keep in mind elderly family members, younger children and pets. Information and tips including a safety plan checklist are available at pge.com/psps.
- Monitor PG&E's weather forecasting webpage at pge.com/weather.
PG&E opened community resource centers in a variety of locations Wednesday to support customers in affected areas. The utility opened a center in Marin Thursday at Marin Gateway Shopping Center at 150 Donohue St. in Sausalito.
