San Ramon Police Warn Against Publishers Clearing House Scam

Police say they've gotten reports of scammers asking victims to pre-pay taxes on prize winnings over the phone.

SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon police say they have investigated a number of cases in which phone scammers pretend to be Publisher’s Clearing House.

Scammers call the victim and tell them that they won a grand prize, but need to pre-pay the associated taxes in the form of a cashier’s check. Publisher’s Clearing House, or any other legitimate business, does not solicit money over the phone, police said.

Residents are advised to never provide money, account information, or remote access to a computer to anyone who contacts them over the phone.
