Volleyball Players Bringing the Heat to AVP Santa Barbara Open at East Beach (noozhawk.com) — East Beach will host the AVP Santa Barbara Open this weekend, bringing three days of free-to-attend professional and semi-pro beach volleyball with a $60,000 prize purse. Numerous Santa Barbara standouts, from Torrey Van Winden to local high school and college alums, will compete on 16 courts from Friday through Sunday, giving residents a chance to see top-tier play right on their home sand.

Family Remembers Santa Barbara Homicide Victim as Hardworking, Quiet Man (noozhawk.com) — Santa Barbara residents are rallying to support the family of 18-year-old Pablo Fabian Hernandez, whose death at Chase Palm Park is being investigated as a homicide. A community fundraiser with food and drinks will be held Sunday at 227 N. Nopal St. to help his Santa Barbara-based relatives send his body home to Guerrero, Mexico, while police continue seeking information from the public.

Santa Barbara City and County fire crews, Harbor Patrol, Ventura County Fire, and the Coast Guard spent about five hours containing the blaze, which has intensified scrutiny of aging offshore platforms and decommissioning safety just off the local coast.

Santa Barbara County to offer free bus rides, celebrating Clean Air Day (ksby.com) — Santa Barbara County residents can ride several bus systems for free on Oct. 7 in honor of California Clean Air Day, including Santa Barbara MTD and Clean Air Express. Officials hope locals will try transit for everyday trips, highlighting expanding zero-emission bus fleets and the financial and environmental benefits of leaving the car at home, even for just one day.
