A woman in her 30s later died, while the man's condition remains unclear, underscoring the dangerous surf conditions at this popular Santa Cruz County shoreline spot.

A quick-thinking surfer repeatedly charged the animal to drive it off, and no one was hurt, adding another unusual otter encounter to the growing list along the Santa Cruz coastline.
