Officers Find Driver Accused of Trying to Ram CHP Cruiser, Fleeing Scene

Melvin Anthony Slaughter Jr. of Northridge was arrested after midnight while hiding in a residential property in the area of Whitsett Avenue and Weddington Street.

A 43-year-old man allegedly attempted to ram California Highway Patrol officers with his car, and was fired upon but not hit, and was found hiding and arrested.

The shooting was at about 10:45 p.m. Friday near Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Riverside Drive, according to the CHP, which identified the suspect as Melvin Anthony Slaughter Jr. of Northridge.

The tried to ram officers with the Mercedes-Benz he was driving, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi. Officers shot at him, but missed.

The officers had initially attempted to pull Slaughter over on Coldwater Canyon Avenue, just north of the Ventura (101) Freeway, for an unspecified vehicle code violation, but he had failed to stop, according to the CHP.

Slaughter was arrested after midnight while hiding in a residential property in the area of Whitsett Avenue and Weddington Street, the CHP reported.

A female passenger in the vehicle was detained, according to the CHP, but it was unclear if she was arrested.
