📰 News we're reading

1. Watch: Bystander, Sheriff's Helicopter Help Rescue Stranded Hood Mountain Cyclist (patch.com) — Emergency crews used the HENRY-1 sheriff's helicopter to airlift an injured cyclist from Hood Mountain Regional Park in eastern Sonoma County after a crash left him unable to hike out. Working with a bystander, Sonoma Valley and Santa Rosa firefighters helped move the rider to a clearing, where he was flown by longline to a nearby parking lot and transferred to a Sonoma County Fire District ambulance.

2. Sonoma County: No release of Sonoma Developmental Center environmental review in 2026 (pressdemocrat.com) — Permit Sonoma has delayed release of the new environmental impact report for redeveloping the Sonoma Developmental Center, meaning no draft will appear in 2026 after all. The 180-acre Sonoma Valley site is slated for nearly 1,000 homes, commercial space, and a hotel, but court-ordered environmental reviews and community concerns over wildfire, traffic, water, and wildlife continue to slow the project.

3. Sonoma Needs You! Apply to Serve on a City or Regional Commission (sonomacity.org) — If you've ever wanted a louder voice in Sonoma's future, now's your chance: the City of Sonoma is accepting applications for multiple city and regional commissions and committees. These volunteer roles advise the Sonoma City Council on climate action, arts, land use, parks, and more, and the city is actively encouraging residents of all backgrounds, including students and first-timers, to apply online.

4. Sonoma City Council to vote on new city manager, review new wildfire safety rules (sonomanews.com) — Sonoma's City Council will vote Sept. 2 on making Interim City Manager Cristine Alilovich the permanent city manager, while also hearing an informational briefing on new state-mandated wildfire "Zone 0" rules for high-risk neighborhoods. The council will also choose a new alternate planning commissioner, shaping future land-use decisions that affect development and everyday life in the city.

5. A soulful homecoming: Musician Desirae Garcia returns to Sonoma for intimate concert (sonomanews.com) — Sonoma Community Center's Secret Garden will host indie folk musician Desirae Garcia on Sept. 18, bringing her back to the Sonoma Valley community she briefly called home after the Lahaina fires. Backed by Coyote Girls and Desert Hollow, she'll share intimate, rootsy folk sounds in an all-ages show, with tickets available through the center's website.
