📰 News we're reading

1. Volunteers sought for key Sonoma commissions, advisory boards (sonomanews.com) — Sonoma residents are being invited to apply for open seats on several city commissions and advisory boards, including climate action, cultural and fine arts, historic preservation, parks and recreation, traffic safety, and the Sonoma Valley Community Advisory Commission. With both adult and youth positions available, officials stress that everyday community members can directly shape local policies, from environmental priorities to how streets, parks, and historic sites are managed.

2. City Council: Flock sharing restrictions coming (sonomanews.com) — Sonoma residents face new limits on how police share Flock license-plate camera footage, while the City Council also approved a 1% public art fee on most new developments over $250,000. Council members expanded disability access for public comments via Zoom and adopted a hazard mitigation plan that keeps Sonoma eligible for federal disaster grants, with wildfire ranked the city's top risk.

3. Sonoma Awaits 'Monumental' Sculpture Donation (sonomasun.com) — Sonoma is getting its first permanent monumental public sculpture by a local artist, with Cycles #3 set for installation on the southwest corner of Sonoma Plaza and an October 1 unveiling. The piece anchors the city's new Public Art Program and follows a recent 9/11 memorial sculpture dedication at Firehouse #1, signaling a growing commitment to meaningful public art in everyday civic spaces.

4. Permit Sonoma to stop offering walk-in counter service on Fridays (pressdemocrat.com) — If you rely on Permit Sonoma's walk-in counter, be prepared for Friday closures starting Oct. 2, with in-person help limited to Monday through Thursday. The county says the change will free staff to process backlogged permits while inspections and field work still occur Fridays. Officials will review the pilot after six months before deciding whether to restore Friday hours.
