Update: Ledson Fire Crews Hold Flames Near Kenwood Overnight

Firefighters expanded containment while evacuation orders eased after flames threatened steep terrain near Sonoma Highway Monday.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Firefighters tightened their grip on the Ledson Fire overnight, increasing containment to 45 percent by Tuesday morning after the blaze triggered evacuations in the hills east of Santa Rosa, according to CAL FIRE LNU.

The fire is burning at the northern end of Sonoma Valley on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, just west of the Sonoma-Napa county line.

The fire remains at 16.5 acres after burning through light grasses, oak woodland, and brush near the intersection of Sonoma Highway (Highway 12) and North Pythian Road in Kenwood.

Kenwood is an unincorporated community in the Valley of the Moon, roughly 10 miles from east of Santa Rosa and 20 miles from Petaluma.

The blaze grew to about 13 acres Monday, prompting the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office to issue evacuation orders for nearby residents as firefighters battled flames spreading across steep terrain. Authorities later downgraded the evacuation order to a warning as crews gained the upper hand.

CAL FIRE reported about 3 p.m. Monday that air tankers, helicopters, and ground crews were making progress despite difficult conditions as the fire pushed east.

Firefighters will continue mop-up operations today to extinguish remaining hotspots and strengthen containment lines.

At the same time, fire crews were also managing another wildfire in Napa Valley.

Officials have not reported any injuries, damaged structures, or the cause of the Ledson Fire.
