In Spirit of Frost and Angelou, County Seeks Poet Laureate

The new honorary post was created by the board of supervisors to act as an ambassador for literary arts in San Mateo County.

Roses are red, violets are blue, San Mateo County is looking forits first poet laureate -- and it could be you!Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β 

Now through July 31, the county is seeking nominations for poetlaureate, someone who can act as an ambassador for literary arts in San Mateo County. Β  Β Β 

The Board of Supervisors, at its April 23 meeting, created theΒ honorary post to highlight county poets past and present who might nototherwise have been recognized.Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β 

A Poet Laureate Advisory Committee has been formed and consists ofΒ 12 members of the county's literary arts community, including Poet LaureateΒ of California Juan Felipe Herrera.Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β 

"We know there are many fine poets within San Mateo County whoΒ have never been recognized before," Supervisor Warren Slocum said.Β 

"We lookΒ forward to celebrating the diversity of our county through the spoken wordΒ and literary arts."Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β 

Those nominated for the position must be at least 18 years old, acounty resident for at least three years and able to serve a two-year termΒ beginning in October. The person should possess a demonstrated commitment toΒ and passion for poetry and have been published or recognized for poetry andΒ literary contributions, according to the Board of Supervisors.Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β 

Supervisors say the poet laureate must be willing to travel withinΒ the county, the goal being to bring appropriate works to at least fourselected county-sponsored events, and open a meeting each quarter in poem.Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β 

The poet laureate is also expected to write a commemorative poemΒ about the county.Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β 

"A Poet Laureate can act as a steward of language, providingΒ opportunities to savor words and sound," San Mateo County Supervisor CaroleΒ Groom said.Β  Β Β
