San Mateo Bridge Replacement Project Underway Near South San Francisco

Caltrain is working to replace four bridges that are over 100 years old.

The following information comes from a news release from Caltrain:

Work began this month on Caltrain’s San Mateo Bridges Replacement Project, an important infrastructure project that will provide seismic upgrades to four aging railways passes on the Peninsula.

On December 4, crews were scheduled to install and monitor vector control as part of the initial site prep work and set-up for the project, a joint effort between Caltrain and the city of San Mateo.

As a result of the project, San Mateo city residents should expect to hear some construction noise during weekdays, although there is no nighttime work scheduled at this time.

On December 15, crews will be clearing and grubbing the right of way in the project area, and installing ballast retainers the Monte Diablo, Santa Inez and Poplar bridges. That same day, Caltrain passengers should prepare for trains to run on a single track between the San Mateo and Burlingame Caltrain stations. During mid-day times, it will be necessary for customers to board the train from only the southbound or northbound platform. Electronic message signs at Caltrain stations will alert passengers of these instances, and there will be onsite ambassadors to assist during the first week of single-tracking.
