Update: Union City Police Say 'Suspicious Device' Was Likely Hoax

A report of a suspicious device prompted the evacuation of the New Haven Adult School and Kidango childcare program.

Update:

Police have given the all-clear in the impacted area, telling Patch, “Everything is fine.”

The Alameda County Bomb Squad detonated a device that turned out to be a hoax.

Students and staff at the Decoto School for Independent Study, the New Haven Adult School, and the Kidango childcare program, all located on the same campus, were evacuated from 11:15 to 12:45.

According to a written statement from John Mattos of the New Haven Unified School District, “At approximately 11:15 am, Kidango childcare staff were advised by a passing community member that a suspicious looking device was near the sidewalk. The device, apparently intended to resemble an explosive, was found near the children’s playground structure. Kidango staff notified Adult School staff who immediately contacted the Union City Police Department.”

Union City Police officials are asking residents to avoid the area near the Decoto Adult School while officers investigate a report of a suspicious device, according to a Nixle Alert sent by police.

Full alert sent at 11:57 a.m.:

The Union City Police Department is currently involved in police activity at Decoto Adult School located at 600 G Street, Union City.

Please avoid this area for the next 2-4 hours. Police are investigating a suspicious device.

The school is located at at 600 G Street in Union City. New Haven Unified School District officials have not yet been reached for comment.
