2013 Coastal Cleanup was a Great Success!

The 2013 Coastal Cleanup was a great success! Thanks to the coordinating talents of the City's Public Works & Utilities' staff and the Parks & Community Services' Neighborhood Services Division.

Two hundred thirty seven (237) volunteers hit the sloughs, river and beach in Watsonville to participate in the largest global volunteer event of the year, Coastal Clean Up.  Together, community groups from the Watsonville Nature Center, City of Watsonville Neighborhood Services, Monterey Bay Aquarium, River Park, Davis Street and Mona Lisa neighborhoods, Watsonville & Pajaro Valley High Schools, Boy Scouts, and Moreland Notre Dame School kept 772 pounds of trash and 657 pounds of recycling out of our local waterways.

Watsonville High School students reported collecting 417 tiny pieces of trash, 318 cigarette butts, and 200 plastic lids that would have been left on the beach, or washed into the ocean to potentially harm wildlife for years to come without their efforts.

The Watsonville Nature Center sported 95 volunteers, 415 pounds of trash and 402 pounds of recycling, placing them fifth on the area collection weights according to Save Our Shores (SOS).

Thank you all for your continued support in making our community a clean, safe and green place to live in!
