LA Population Growth Outpaces State, County Population Tops 10.1 Milliion

Only one city in the county saw a drop in population.

Los Angeles County’s population grew by 0.8 percent to more than 10.13 million last year, while the city of Los Angeles alone adding nearly 43,000 residents, the state Department of Finance reported today.

According to the state, Los Angeles County’s population on Jan. 1 was 10,136,559. The city of Los Angeles had 3,957,022 residents, a 1.1 percent increase from the previous year.

Consistent with being the state’s largest city, Los Angeles’ population growth was the biggest in the state over the past year, followed by San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco.

Long Beach, the second-largest city in the county, grew by 0.5 percent over the past year and now has a population of 472,779, according to the state.

Only one city in Los Angeles County had a drop in population, with Hidden Hills showing a 0.1 percent reduction -- a loss of one resident.

Orange County’s population jumped by 1.1 percent over the past year to reach 3,147,655.

Overall, California grew by 0.9 percent last year, adding 358,000 people to bring the population to 38.7 million, the department reported.
