Boulder County Coronavirus: Fire Restrictions Announced

Under the county's disaster emergency declaration, restrictions have been announced to reduce strain on firefighters and law enforcement.

BOULDER COUNTY, CO — Level 1 Fire Restrictions were announced Wednesday for the unincorporated mountain areas of western Boulder County. The Board of County Commissioners made the decision amid limited firefighting and law enforcement resources, officials said.

While current weather and fire conditions do not meet the state-authorized levels for law enforcement agencies to enact local fire restrictions, the commissioners have the authority to implement the restrictions under the county's declaration of a local disaster emergency, which was announced March 14.

“With firefighting and law enforcement resources stretched thin due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boulder County Commissioners and the Boulder County Sheriff are concerned that adding the potential risk of increased wildfire danger to the current public stress load is more than our community should have to endure,” Board of County Commissioners Chair Deb Gardner said in a statement.
