BOULDER, CO — Two stars, one high upon a mountain and the other many miles away atop an iconic rock, were lit the same day in Colorado as symbols of hope amid the spread of the new coronavirus.

The Boulder Star on Flagstaff Mountain and The Star above Castle Rock were both lit Monday to shine in the darkness for anyone who can catch a glimpse of them during the state's stay-at-home order.

“We are so pleased that our partners at the Boulder Chamber have stepped up to relight the star on Flagstaff,” Boulder Mayor Sam Weaver said in a statement.

“At this moment when so many are looking for reassurance and hope, the light of the star will remind us of all of those who are working to serve and protect our community," he said. "This is a time when we all need to bond in support of our common needs, and the light of the star is an emblem of that commitment.”

More than 50 miles south of Flagstaff Mountain, The Star was also lit atop the Town of Castle Rock.

"We will get through this, and my wish is that everyone who sees The Star will ask themselves what they can do in the community to help those who need support," Castle Rock Mayor Jason Gray said in a statement earlier this month.

Both stars are normally lit during the holiday season, but local leaders decided they need to be lit until community members return to their normal daily activities.

Just two days after the stars were lit, everyone in Colorado was placed under a stay-at-home order.
