ESTES PARK, CO — Halloween is just around the corner, and thrill seekers are out hunting for the scariest places to visit in the country. It will come as no surprise to Coloradans and die-hard fans of "The Shining" that the infamous Stanley Hotel in Estes Park has been named among the five scariest places in the world to visit, according to a FinanceBuzz report.

Many believe The Stanley Hotel inspired the fictional Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's 1977 bestselling novel "The Shining." While King denied being inspired by a specific hotel, evidence shows he was indeed inspired by the now-iconic Stanley Hotel, which is about an hour's drive northwest of Boulder. The famous author stayed in the hotel's room 217, according to author George Beahm, who wrote "The Stephen King Companion." King awoke from a nightmare while in the hotel room and began creating the framework for "The Shining," Beahm said.

There have been reports of ghosts, flickering lights, doors slamming and sudden temperature drops at the hotel for decades, according to Finance Buzz.
