Snowboarder, Skier Die In Separate Crashes On Eldora Mountain

BOULDER COUNTY, CO — It's been a deadly past few days on Eldora Mountain — a snowboarder died Sunday after he crashed into a tree, and less than 24 hours later, a skier also crashed into a tree and died, officials said.

A 26-year-old man collided with a tree while snowboarding on the Jolly Jug Trail, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said. Bystanders called 911 around 3:50 p.m. and tried to perform CPR on the man, and ski patrol arrived five minutes later to take him to a first aid room. A helicopter from Northern Colorado Medevac was called to the area along with ground-based rescue personnel and deputies.

"Unfortunately, despite extensive efforts by medical personnel, the male party succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene at approximately 4:40 p.m.," the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The snowboarder's identity will be withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Then a 16-year-old skier crashed into a tree around 11 a.m. Monday on the mountain's Lower Ambush Run, authorities said.

"Life-saving measures were taken, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead on-scene," the sheriff's office said.

The cause of the 16-year-old's death will be determined by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.
