🌱 District's Free Childcare For Students + PPCC Receives Grant

Here are the top stories today in Colorado Springs:

  1. A new child care program for a southern Colorado school district already has over 1,000 students enrolled. The free before-and-after school program is open to D-2 kindergarten to fifth graders, who can show up to 14 locations in the district five days a week. The program began in August and already has about 1,012 students enrolled. Students can get help with their homework, play with puzzles or color, and even play active games like basketball and soccer. Over 80 new jobs were created within the district for this program.   2. Pikes Peak Community College and PPCC Foundation have been awarded two grants totaling $4.6 million from the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative to help with economic recovery. The "Finish What You Started Scholarship" will receive the largest of the funding. It is for Coloradans who nearly completed college with at least 30 credit hours, but haven't achieved a degree. The remaining funds will be used for the "Back to Work Scholarship" which will support those displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic, including those laid off or furloughed.   3. The parents of a 6-year-old Colorado Springs girl on Wednesday sued the Glenwood Caverns amusement park where she was killed over Labor Day weekend claiming it was a preventable death caused by ride workers' recklessness. (Colorado Springs Gazette)
  4. Colorado Springs firefighters were called to a worksite near Garden of the Gods Road Wednesday morning, after a trench collapsed and trapped one worker up to his legs. (KRDO)
  5. For the next two Saturdays, October 23rd and 30th, people can visit the Miners' Pumpkin Patch for activities, like big checkers, tractor-pulled hayrides, battleship, ladder ball, and spooky stories. (KRDO)
