Here are the top stories in Colorado Springs today:
- Colorado Springs is getting closer to enacting an ordinance banning the sale of dogs and cats at pet stores, and a possible $500 fine for violators. During a City Council work session Monday, president Tom Strand was expected to propose an ordinance that would prohibit such sales unless pets come from shelters, rescues, licensed breeders and other legitimate animal organizations. During a Council discussion on the matter in late February, Strand said that an ordinance is necessary because many pet stores across the country sell dogs and cats that are acquired from puppy and kitten mills. Such mills are known for inhumane treatment of animals and living conditions that promote an infection that can be transmitted to humans. (KRDO)
- GOJO Industries rewarded Colorado Springs Airport with the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR cleaning grant for $2,375. According to the press release, the grant is to help exemplify the airport's health and safety of travelers. Colorado Springs Airport was one of only 11 airports in the country to receive this grant. The GBAC STAR is a performance-based accreditation program to recognize the airport's work practices, procedures, protocols, responses, and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. (KRDO)
- Firefighters have extinguished a fire that trapped some residents on the top floor of an apartment complex near Memorial Park. Crews used ladders to help a man and a toddler get out through a window and down to safety. (KKTV 11 News)
- On Sunday, a vigil was held for eighteen-year-old Mary Abiera-Lumbres who was killed in a car collision last week. (KKTV 11 News)
- The City of Colorado Springs' Community Development Division has collaborated with Colorado Legal Services and Pikes Peak Library District, and now The Justice Center, and will be hosting a virtual workshop today on renter's rights. (Press Release Desk)
