Action Center Distributes 10,000 Pairs Of Socks To People In Need

The Lakewood nonprofit now holds the world record for the largest sock drive.

LAKEWOOD, CO — The Action Center, a Lakewood nonprofit, worked with community partners to distribute around 10,000 pairs of socks Thursday to those in need.

On Dec. 4, The Action Center and the show, "Breaking History with Ryan Avery," broke the world record for the Largest Sock Drive in an eight hour period after collecting 37,556 pairs of brand-new socks. The team has since become the Guinness Book of World Records official World Record Holder for the feat.

The Action Center’s original goal was to collect 10,857 pairs of new socks to raise awareness of homelessness in Colorado, organizers said. Community members nearly quadrupled that goal, donating 37,556 pairs of new socks in just five hours.

“We are blown away by the generosity of our community and are so grateful for the donations,” Pam Brier, The Action Center's executive director, said in a statement. “So many of us take for granted the difference one pair of socks can make for someone, but for many of our participants, a few new pairs of socks provide critical comfort and warmth during our cold winter months. One small gesture of kindness and generosity goes an awfully long way towards spreading hope and connecting us to one another through caring compassion."
