Health & Fitness

summer and sunscreen

As school wind down and our kids spends hours outdoors, remember to apply sunscreen.  Sunscreen has an SPF number (the sun protection factor) which is a measure of the effectiveness of sunscreen quantified in a laboratory.  The SPF measures how long it would take you to sunburn if you were not wearing sunscreen vs the time it would take when one wears sunscreen.  The higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against UVB, the ultraviolet radiation which can cause sunburn, although there are limits on the effectiveness.  SPF 15 sunscreen blocks about 94% of UVB rays; SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays; and SPF 45 sunscreen blocks about 98% of UVB rays. Remember to apply sunscreen (water-resistant) liberally prior to going outside, and to reapply every 2 hours, especially if swimming.
