BERLIN, CT — Four baby squirrels are alive and recovering after they were found on train tracks with their tails braided together, according to Kensington Bird & Animal Hospital. Unfortunately, their tails were broken and needed to be amputated.

The Animal Hospital thanked the "kind hearted person who found them and brought them in to be cared for" in a Facebook post.

Hospital officials emphasized that people should leave wildlife alone.

."..we do know and understand that this occurrence of tail knotting does happen naturally in the wild, however that is not the case here. The tails were broken and braided together as well as tied together by a human made object. Where these babies were found was also an indicator of animal cruelty."

The hospital's post has garnered more than 70 comments. "How terrible!" one user wrote. "Poor babies. I love squirrels. They can be a pain but are just so cute. Thank you for helping them!!"

The hospital wrote that animal abuse is never acceptable and should always be reported.

This isn't the only recent case of animal cruelty in Connecticut. Earlier this month, a municipal employee in Enfield was arrested on charges that she abandoned her dog in Suffield. The dog was rescued from traffic by a passing motorist.

A Stratford man was arrested last month after he was charged with extreme neglect of his three dogs. One of the dogs was in such poor health that they needed to be euthanized.
