John Barile Named Superintendent of Bethany Schools

The Bethany public school district is pleased to announce the appointment of John W.  Barile as their new Superintendent of Schools. Barile, the current principal of Joseph A. Foran High School, brings 19 years of professional experience to the district and is looking forward to beginning his tenure in Bethany.  He is expected to begin his work in Bethanyin January 2013.   

A graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, Barile received both his bachelor of science and master of arts degrees in education, as well as a 6^th year certificate in administration at the university.  Mr. Barile also serves as an adjunct professor at Southern Connecticut State University, where he lectures on child development.  Mr. Barile has the unique experience of having been a successful principal at the elementary school, middle school, and high school levels.

Barile joined the Milford Public School district at a time when the middle school system was just getting its start in the city. He began his career in Milford in 1994 as a 6^th and 8^th  grade language arts and science teacher at Harborside Middle School, where he also served as an 8^th grade Team Leader.   In 1999, Barile was then promoted to the position of Dean of Students at West Shore Middle School. During this time, he also served the district as assistant varsity football and track coach at Joseph A. Foran High School. 

Three years later, Barile was appointed to the post of principal at John F. Kennedy elementary. During the next four years, Barile spent a significant amount of time developing a strong home-school-community relationship.  Barile worked hard to cultivate the numerous talents of his students and faculty and to increase parent participation at the school level.  The alignment of curriculum and assessment was the cornerstone of Barile’s leadership at JFK. While there, achievement scores rose considerably and the school was also recognized for its work with the Connecticut Commission on the Arts for incorporating higher order thinking skills through the arts into the core curriculum.

In 2006, Barile was assigned to take the helm at West Shore Middle School.  Again, he made the development of a strong school community a priority, as well as guided the implementation of several new curriculum and learning intervention programs.  He also was one of the first in the district to develop and implement an Advisor/Advisee program for all students at the school.

In 2008, Barile was asked to take on the role of principal at Foran High School and has spent the last 5 years there.  His leadership efforts were clearly recognized as he handled several large scale issues during his tenure there.  The school went through a massive reconstruction project which demanded a great deal of attention and time for its eventual completion.

During his tenure he has led the faculty in aligning the curriculum with the common core state standards and also implemented scientifically researched based interventions. Foran High School has also increased its participation rates in advanced placement courses, fine arts, and athletics, as well as other student after school activities.  Foran has instituted a graduation with service recognition program to promote volunteerism and community service.  As evidence of this, the graduating class of 2012 has contributed over 10,000 hours of community service.  In 2008 Foran High school received its accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.  Amongst its commendations, Foran was recognized for the level of ownership of the curriculum by the faculty, the creative use and availability of technology.

Barile and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of two sons.  The family resides in Milford.
