Initial Ruling Reached in Fire at JCC of Greater New Haven in Woodbridge

The facility will be closed for an extended period as a result of the four-alarm blaze on Dec. 5.

WOODBRIDGE, CT — While the investigation continues, preliminary findings by Woodbridge fire officials state that last week's fire at the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven was accidental.

The department released the statement in a Facebook post. Two firefighters were injured while battling the four-alarm blaze.

"While the investigation is ongoing, we believe the fire started in the sauna area located in the men's locker room," official wrote about the Woodbridge-based facility on Amity Road, adding that investigators "have ruled out an intentional fire."

The fire caused enough damage to require the temporary closure of the center, which the New Haven Register reports could last for at least six, or possibly 12, months.
