Evander's Been Though Unrelenting Trauma & Needs A Home, Again

His toes sliced off, abused, neglected, he's been adopted twice; once given back, and 2nd time abandoned. A special dog needs a special home

BRANFORD, CT — In May 2022 Patch first wrote about Evander, the Yorkie wire-haired terrier mix puppy who'd been abandoned with horrific and intentional wounds to his paw: three digits were sliced off.

An abused, traumatized and fearful dog, he was cared for at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter. Given his many issues, it was hard to find him a family, but one was located and off Evander went.

But the arrangement didn't last long. Just a few weeks after going to what was thought would be his forever home, in June 2022 the three-legged young dog was back at the shelter.

Then, in November 2022 just before Thanksgiving, he was again adopted. But as explained by DCAS director Laura Selvaggio Burban, recently, Evander was again rejected, indeed, he was "dumped," she said.

"They dumped him at a shelter in Rhode Island, claiming they didn’t know where they’d gotten him from," she told Patch. That animal shelter director contacted Dan Cosgrove after identifying him through his microchip. Shelter staff went to get him.

"He was traumatized after he was returned because he was scared, so we are looking for an adopter that understands the behavioral issues dogs who've been traumatized by humans suffer," Burban said. "He has come such a long way, but he needs a real family who won’t give up on him or abandon him again."
