Review on Remington Arms BRIDGEPORT

A DEEP ECONOMIC HIT

Remington Arms-A perspective from production to destruction-

AT one point im Bridgeports'History Remington Arms was a 1.5 million square foot structure comprised of 13 buildings covering 73 acres .ITS' location was on Barnum Avenue in our city.IT was built originally in 1867 under the name of THE UNION METALIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY.The company has a vast history.IN one time period it was the largest ammunition supplier .The factory employed about 17,000 workers .IT was indeed one of the largest employers here in Bridgeport.IT stabilized the economic climate here for years.IT was a major supplier to the military forces. Then in 1970 things changed with Remington sending to ARKANSAS its'major production. This was the beginning of the end.Job losses and unemployment problems came about.BY 1988 the site became abandoned and today stands blighted like a war zone .This is just another eyesore for Bridgeport. This empty structure joins others in our city. With other closed factories over the years lost jobs, lost taxes, loss productivity especially a loss as well to our military.OUR economy took a hit which was critical then.

Now the fire burnt structure tells its'own story .Broken windows, empty parking lots, empty buildings decomposing, stories of ghosts, lost tax dollars, and jobs lost forever. Some say the company was cursed and if that is true or not is debatable, however it stands in ruins ,a part of our cities history, part of AMERICANA that we will never see repeat itself like other factories were once major players here for it too lies among the forgotten and forsaking.
