Suspect Arrested In Machete Attack In Bridgeport: Police

The attack occurred at Seaside Park on May 28, according to authorities.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 20-year-old Bridgeport man was arrested Monday morning on a charge of first-degree assault in connection with a May 28 machete attack in Bridgeport that left the victim with "a serious physical injury to the face," according to police.

Jilmer Valverde was apprehended by members of the US Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Bridgeport Violent Crime Task Force.

Details of the arrest were not disclosed, but Bridgeport Police Det. Angel Llanos was the lead investigator in the case, said Capt. Kevin Gilleran in a statement.

"[Llanos] should be commended for quickly developing a suspect in this case," Gilleran said.

The incident occurred in the evening of May 28 on Waldemere Avenue near the "Diamond 10" baseball field in Seaside Park.

It was the first of two machete attacks in Bridgeport over the course of about a month. The second incident occurred on June 18 at Central High School on Lincoln Boulevard, though police have not disclosed whether the department has developed a suspect in the second case.

Valverde is being held in lieu of bail of $750,000, and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Monday.
