Danbury Zoners Approve Revised Super-Sized Caraluzzi's Market Sign

The new design for a large illuminated sign on Mill Plain Road will be dark between 11 p.m. and 6 p.m.

DANBURY, CT — The Danbury Zoning Board of Appeals has given its blessing to plans by Caraluzzi's Market to erect a large LED sign at the front of their property on 102 Mill Plain Road.

The approved sign, at 211 square feet, is a scaled down version of a design the zoners nixed that weighed in at 174 square feet. The size of the illuminated display was reduced from 112 square feet to 96 square feet.

The sign, which will promote the grocery store, a liquor store and a bank, will be dark between 11 p.m. and 6 p.m. The sign will also rotate its graphics less frequently than originally proposed: no more than once every 30 seconds, down from 10 seconds in the original design.

Zoning regulations along that area of Mill Plain Road forbid signs larger than 75 square feet unless some hardship can be approved. The attorney for Caralucci's told the board during a hearing last week that the exception is warranted as his client's store was set back 370 feet from the road.
