Smith, who was named an Assistant Republican Leader in December, joins a House Republican caucus of 64 members – a minority that now has a stronger voice in Hartford after gaining 10 seats in the November election. On Wednesday, Smith raised his right hand, swearing to uphold the state constitution and to serve his constituents of the 108th District, which includes New Fairfield, Danbury, New Milford and Sherman.

The legislative session, which gaveled in Wednesday, will stretch through June 3, and lawmakers will work with the governor to set the budget for the next two years. After four years of one-party rule in Hartford, including the largest tax increase in state history in 2011, Connecticut taxpayers are expecting a $3 billion deficit.

“We still have high unemployment and a massive budget deficit,” Smith said. “Things in Connecticut are not pretty. But if we can control our spending, I am confident that we can make Connecticut a desirable place to live, work and retire. It is an uphill battle but one worth fighting for.”

Constituents can follow committee meetings and House debates as they unfold live on Connecticut’s public affairs television network, CT-N, or by streaming the proceedings online by visiting www.ctn.state.ct.us.

Rep. Smith represents the 108th General Assembly district communities of New Fairfield, Sherman, New Milford and Danbury.
