Coyote, Injured on Hoyt Street, Put Down by Police Officer

There are many reports of coyotes killed in motor vehicle accidents, according to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.

Responding to a report of an injured coyote on the roadway on Hoyt Street, a police officer found the animal nearby on the Woodway Country Club golf course, appearing badly injured and dragging its rear legs.

The officer shot the coyote to put it out of its misery. There was no report of anyone coming into contact with the animal. The incident occurred at about 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

According to the fact sheet, coyotes, originally from the western plains, now range from Alaska to the southeastern United States. They were first spotted in Connecticut in the 1950s, originally in the northwestern part of the state, but now are found throughout the state.

Typically looking like a small, thin German shepherd, Coyotes are larger in the eastern U.S., apparently from interbreeding with gray wolves.

With many coyotes across the United States, reports of them attacking humans are extremely rare. They can be a danger to pets. There are many reports of coyotes being killed in car accidents.
