Portland Fireworks May Be Canceled Due to Lack of Funds

Don't firm up those Fourth of July celebration plans just yet.

PORTLAND, CT- The future for this year’s fireworks display is uncertain.

Lack of funds may mean cancellation of the annual Portland fireworks display, the Middletown Press reported.

The committee in charge of planning and executing the tradition have raised $9,000, yet have estimated it would take about $30,000 to mount the display as scheduled on July 30, according to the Middletown Press. The committee had $18,000 in hand at this point last year, double what they currently hold.

The chances of raising the money is reportedly a bit bleak with $21,000 still to raise, made all the more crushing as this year marks the 175th anniversary of Portland’s establishment, the Middletown Press reported. The committee may consider rescheduling the event for September when the anniversary celebration is held.
