Updated: Storm Takes Down Trees and Power Lines in East Hampton, Portland

As of midnight, 112 Connecticut Light & Power customers were without power in East Hampton and 54 in Portland.

A high-wind storm that blew threw the area Friday afternoon took down several trees along Route 66 in East Hampton and caused a power line to come down along Route 17 in Portland.

A wire came down at the corner of Great Hill Road and Cox Road in Portland was seen on fire and emitting heavy smoke around 5:15 p.m. Fire officials were on scene to monitor the wire, although a firefighter told Patch the department was just waiting for CL&P to arrive because they have to be on scene to remove the wire.

Power is reportedly out along that neighborhood. According to CL&P, 18 percent of Portland, or 850 customers, currently lack electricity.

There was also an initial report of a wire that came down on a tractor trailer in Portland, although that remains unconfirmed as of 5:30 p.m. In East Hampton, a police dispatcher said there are multiple trees down on Route 66.

A tree was also blocking one lane on Route 17 in Portland, although motorists were simply driving around it.

Traffic on Route 66 eastbound is backed up a ways heading into East Hampton.
