East Haven High School Student, 16, Died in Car Crash: UPDATE

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m.

East Haven police said in a new release that Shawn Franco, 16, and Janice Markey, 64, of New Haven, were both operators of vehicles involved in a head-on collision Friday.

Franco succumbed to his injuries following the crash, police said.

Markey was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Nothing further is available at this time, police said in a statement.

"Please note that this remains an ongoing investigation by the South Central Connecticut Traffic Unit. The investigation will likely take several months to complete. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact the East Haven Police Department at 203-468-3820," East Haven police said in a news release.

On Friday night it was revealed that a 16-year-old died in a car crash in East Haven on the New Haven town line.

Now, it’s been revealed that it was East Haven High School student Shawn Franco, 16, who died in the accident.

Police at the time said the accident occurred at 2:26 p.m. Friday on South End Road as two cars collided head on. A second person sustained serious injuries.

Crisis teams are helping grieving students, NBC Connecticut reports.

Shawn’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses. Almost $2,000 has been raised thus far.

According to the GoFundMe page:

“My name is Magdalena Rivera, my family is reaching out in need after suffering a tragic loss of my son, Shawn Franco also known as Swizy On'Site Vasquez.

Shawn was taken from us suddenly at the age of 16 after a fatal car crash on March 4th, 2016. Shawn was a gift to all who knew him and in return deserves a burial in tribute to his wonderful life he had with us.

We are reaching out to all the caring individuals to help provide my son with a proper burial. It is in our best interest to finalize his burial as soon as we can, therefore every penny will count toward providing a tribute to him. We can not explain how special Shawn was to us and we would appreciate any support we can get to celebrate his life.”
