NBC Connecticut reports that the unidentified Jennings Road resident was carrying a registered handgun and fired one shot at the pit bull, which was injured but survived the shooting.

The man was walking his dogs on Prince Street around 8 p.m. on Tuesday when the pit bull ran out of its yard (the gate had apparently been left open) and charged at the man and his dogs, according to the Citizen. The man was able to separate his dogs from the pit bull, which then turned on him.

The Fairfield Animal Control is investigating if the pit bull has been involved with any previous incidents and if it is up to date on its rabies vaccine, according to the Citizen.
