Fairfield Schools Superintendent Discusses Decision About Wednesday's Classes

"I want to apologize for the difficult travel conditions many of you experienced this morning." — Superintendent Michael Testani

FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield Public Schools did not have a delayed opening on Wednesday, Feb. 25, while snow fell during the morning commute, and Superintendent of Schools Michael Testani is taking responsibility for the decision.

At least two other nearby communities either delayed the start of classes or closed schools on Wednesday, as municipalities scrambled to clear roads.

In a message to the Fairfield school community, Testani apologized.

"I want to apologize for the difficult travel conditions many of you experienced this morning," Testani wrote. "The safety of our students, staff, and families is always our highest priority, and I regret that today’s weather made travel challenging.

"Decisions about school closures or delays are made around 4:30am, using the most current information available, including consultation with weather services. Based on the early morning forecast, we anticipated that students and staff would arrive before the heaviest snowfall. Unfortunately, the snow developed more quickly and more intensely than predicted."

Schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday following the major snow storm that swept through the Northeast on Sunday and Monday, but Testani said that making weather-related decisions can be difficult.

"While we strive to make the best call with the information available, forecasts do not always unfold as expected," Testani said. "I apologize for any stress or inconvenience this caused and appreciate your understanding and patience."

The district will not count any tardiness or absences on Wednesday against a student's record, due to the weather conditions.

"If your child was unable to attend school due to the weather, please contact your school so the absence can be excused," Testani said. "Thank you for your continued support as we work together to keep our students and staff safe."
