GoFundMe Campaign Launched To Help Fairfield Family Who Lost Home, Pets In Fire

The family's two dogs died in the Saturday night fire on Greenfield Street.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Stephanie Santiana and her family, who lost their home and two pet dogs in a fire Saturday in Fairfield.

"As we navigate this tragedy while caring for a newborn and grieving the loss of our pets, we are asking for support to help us rebuild," the effort's organizer, Jessica Oliva, wrote on Santiana's behalf. "All donations will go toward replacing newborn essentials and basic household items so we can begin to create a safe, stable environment again."

As of Thursday morning, the campaign had raised nearly $19,000 toward a goal of $25,000.

The fire was called in at about 8:15 p.m. on Saturday in the 300 block of Greenfield St. in Fairfield. Besides the two dogs, no other injuries were reported.

"In addition to the emotional toll, the fire took all of our newborn’s essential items—clothing, diapers, bottles, a crib, and other necessities needed to care for a baby," the campaign states. "We also lost our furniture, personal belongings, and everyday household items, leaving us with the difficult task of starting over from nothing."

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the home's roof to let out heat and smoke, and used four hose lines to battle the blaze and protect a neighboring house, according to fire officials.

Additionally, the frigid temperatures over the weekend, and other fire calls at the same time, took a toll on firefighting efforts. Bringing the blaze under control took about 90 minutes, authorities said.

"Initial water application on the fire was delayed because the two normally closest engines were already engaged on other calls," officials wrote in a statement. "Other challenges included the initial fire hydrant not working, single-digit temperatures, and heavy winds."

"Any contribution, no matter the size, means more than we can express," the campaign states. "If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser. Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and support during this incredibly difficult time."
