Man Pleads Guilty To Raping College Student In Fairfield

The man was arrested late last year after hiding in Mexico for more than four years.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A man who was arrested late last year after hiding in Mexico for more than four years has pleaded guilty to brutally beating and raping a college student in Fairfield in 2014, according to the Connecticut Post. Edibaldo "Eddie" Duran, 29, was extradited from Mexico to Connecticut on Dec. 19 and then taken into the custody of the Fairfield Police Department.

The Post reports Duran faces 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in July after pleading guilty to home invasion and aggravated first-degree sexual assault. He was originally charged by Fairfield Police with home invasion, first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree strangulation, first-degree assault, first-degree unlawful restraint and sixth-degree larceny.

Police said that at about 3 a.m. on Sept. 1, 2014, a man broke into a private residence occupied by female college students. The victim, who was the lone occupant of the home at the time, was "awakened by the suspect, beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled to the point of unconsciousness," according to police.

After an "intensive investigation," including a scientific examination of physical evidence, Duran was identified as the person responsible for the attack and an arrest warrant affidavit was signed for his arrest in September of 2014, police said. On Sept. 5, 2014 at 12:45 a.m., Duran boarded an AeroMexico flight that departed from JFK and arrived in Mexico City at 5:08 a.m. later that same morning.

The Post previously reported that Duran was arrested after Mexican authorities, working on information from the U.S. Marshal Service, surrounded a house in the south-central city of Puebla and took him into custody. He was then extradited to Connecticut for his outstanding arrest warrant from 2014.
