No Outages, Few Crashes Monday In Fairfield Despite Snow, Rain

FAIRFIELD, CT — Despite the mix of rain and snow that hit Fairfield over the weekend, first responders were seeing relatively few weather-related emergencies Monday.

The fire department responded to a crash with an injured passenger Monday morning on Burr Street, but Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir credited overnight snowmelt for an otherwise quiet morning after police reported several crashes Sunday. Fairfield schools let out early Monday due to the weather.

"We've been actually pretty lucky," Kalapir said early Monday afternoon. "... Hopefully all the buses will get the kids home."

The fire department did not receive any overnight reports of downed trees or power outages, Kalapir said Monday, and low tide levels prevented flooding in the beach area. As of mid-day Monday, there had been no road closures as a result of the storm.

"We've been lucky," he said. "It's been almost a non-event event."

Kalapir did urge residents to clear any storm drains in their neighborhoods that are clogged with leaves, warning that the blockages can prevent snow and rain from draining, causing water to freeze in the streets.

Fairfield was predicted to see up to 2 inches of snow accumulation overnight into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, with snow possible Tuesday morning. The area is under a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday.
