Crisp Fall Air, Fresh Adventures: Pack 170 Welcomes New Leaders and Farmington Families

UNIONVILLE, CT — With backpacks packed, pencils sharpened, and the unmistakable crispness of autumn creeping into the Farmington Valley air, a new school year is officially underway. Along with the return to the classroom comes the start of another exciting season of outdoor exploration, as Unionville’s Cub Scout Pack 170 launches into fall with a brand-new slate of leadership.

This September, as local families settle into their school-year routines, Pack 170 is announcing key leadership appointments designed to strengthen its mission of character development, community service, and hands-on adventure. Three dedicated volunteers are stepping into core roles, pairing their professional backgrounds with a shared passion for youth mentorship.

Taking the helm as Cubmaster is Joseph Courtney, a lifelong Scout whose journey began in the late 1990s. In a fitting milestone, Courtney assumes leadership of the pack exactly 19 years after celebrating his own Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

“I am honored to take on the role of Cubmaster for Pack 170,” Courtney said. “Scouting has been a fundamental part of my life for decades. I look forward to serving this pack and helping our Scouts grow in character, leadership, and adventure to the very best of my abilities.”

Joining him on the leadership team is Ricardo Fernandes, who steps into the dual roles of Committee Chair and Assistant Cubmaster. A familiar face in local youth sports and within the pack community, Fernandes is the Associate Director of Learning & Development at Verizon and brings a focus on team building and skill development.

“Scouting has always been about character, community, and adventure,” said Fernandes. “I am eager to create a supportive, dynamic, and fun environment where all our Scouts can grow and build lifelong skills.”

Rounding out the team is Elizabeth Courtney, who will serve as the unit’s Chartered Organization Representative (COR). A local educator with Farmington Public Schools, she provides a vital link between the pack, local schools, and community partners.

“My life’s work—both in my professional capacity and in my volunteer time with Scouting—is centered on helping children reach their full potential,” said Elizabeth Courtney. “I am excited to support our leaders and families as we continue to build a program that is engaging, educational, and impactful.”
