Indians Top Terriers in Consolation Game at Erica Garrett Memorial Tournament

The Rocky Hill girls' basketball team appeared poised to dominate Farmington during the consolation game of the Erica Garrett Memorial Holiday Tournament last night. But the game, which opened the event that evening, ended with Farmington gaining a lead in the last few minutes of the final quarter and winning, 38-32.

Rocky Hill coach Pete Egan attributed the loss to the large number of turnovers by his team during the second half of the game. He called it a disturbing trend in his team’s performance, referring to earlier games this season with Bloomfield and Portland.

“We have yet to find players who want the ball when it’s on the line,” Egan said.

Farmington coach Russ Crist described the quality of his team’s defense as critical to their game, along with pacing themselves for the second half.

“It was a total team effort in the second half,” said Crist. “It’s what we’ve asked them to do during the last few weeks."

During the first quarter of the game, the Terriers dominated the Indians  by a score of 14-2. Rocky Hill led 21-7 in the second quarter and 28-19 in the third.

During the fourth quarter, however, Farmington gradually made up ground until Rocky Hill led just 32-30. With less than two minutes to go in the final quarter, Farmington took the lead, 33-32.

Egan said Rocky Hill maintained control of the ball while mounting a good offense and defense during the first half of the game, but that changed in the second half.

“They clearly out-hustled us,” he said.

Junior Emily Anderson was the top scorer for Rocky Hill with 12 points. Sophomore Alexa St. Germain added eight points and sophomore Kirstyn Arcata had four.

Sophomore Bridget Kelly scored 12 points for Farmington, with junior Cally Lombardi adding seven points and senior Ugne Vaiciulyte six.

The Berlin Redcoats defeated the Portland Highlanders 55-31 in the tournament’s championship game.

Anderson and Vaiciulyte were both selected for the all-tournament team along with seniors Alyssa Unikewicz and Meaghan Rodgers of Portland.
