More Charges for Glastonbury Man in Golf Club Theft Investigations

Police: The new charges come after a victim saw the suspect's mugshot … wearing the victim's stolen sweatshirt.

A Glastonbury man is facing more burglary and larceny charges in connection with a series of golf club thefts last summer — after the victim saw a mugshot of the suspect wearing his missing sweatshirt, according to police.

Derek Benson, 30, of 269 Georgetown Dr., Glastonbury, was served with an active arrest warrant on Sept. 16 while making a court appearance at state Superior Court in Manchester for an unrelated matter, according to Glastonbury Police.

Police said, “The arrest stemmed from the investigation into a residential burglary which occurred in Glastonbury in July of 2014. The case had previously been suspended when no leads were developed, but the victim contacted GPD in July 2015 after seeing a mugshot of Benson taken in October 2014 that had been reposted on a social media website.”

According to police, “In the photo, Benson was wearing the victim’s sweatshirt, which had been stolen during the burglary of his residence. A subsequent investigation linked Benson to the burglary.”

Benson, who already faces burglary and larceny charges in connection with 10 other thefts of golf clubs and equipment, now faces additional charges of third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, second-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief.
