Tomahawks Down Southington to Reach Class LL Semifinals

A late touchdown boosted Southington past the Tomahawks during the regular season, but it was Glastonbury who would have the final laugh in 2012.
  
The Blue Knights were eliminated from playoff contention after falling to the Tomahawks 23-14 in the Class LL Quarterfinals at Fontana Field in Southington Wednesday, allowing Glastonbury to advance to the semifinals.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Southington High School, who battled back from an early deficit to take a 14-10 halftime lead before losing the momentum in the second half when Glastonbury took over for good following an early third-quarter bomb from Tomahawk quarterback Josh Hill into the hands of wide receiver Grant Lewis.

Glastonbury never looked back.

Big plays such as that strike proved the difference in the game and while the previously undefeated Blue Knights had overcome adversity in the past, Glastonbury's big plays were too much to overcome.

Mike Drury credited the Tomahawks for their success, telling the Record-Journal that turnovers and mistakes were the reason the Blue Knights fell:

“Big plays. Big plays and we had a couple turnovers,” Drury said. “In big games, you can’t turn the ball over and you can’t give up the big plays. They got those on us. They’re a very good team, very good athletes out there and they just caught us in a couple things.”

The game started with a bang as the two teams exchanged blows right away. Glastonbury struck first with a 22-yard by Hill, but Southington drove right back, going the length of the field as junior quarterback Steven Barmore ran it in from two yards out.

Southington would then take a lead of their own as Jarrid Grimmett ran one 40 yards for the score in the second-quarter. Glastonbury responded with a field goal off the foot of Kyle Wucherpfenning to make it 14-10 at the half.

But the second half was all Glastonbury. The Hill to Lewis score gave them the lead and 24-yard pass from Ben Berey to Ryan Marano sealed the win.

Glastonbury High School will now take on Xavier High School on Dec. 2.
