Granby Schools Contacted Police After Parent Concern

The district said the man passed the required background checks when he was hired, and the matter is now being reviewed by authorities.

GRANBY, CT — Granby Public Schools has confirmed that a former employee is no longer working for the district amid an ongoing review by authorities, according to a letter Superintendent Cheri Burke sent to families.

WFSB initially reported Tuesday evening that the district had addressed social media posts involving Tucker Rajala, who previously worked for Granby Public Schools. The station’s report said the district contacted authorities after a parent brought a concern to officials.

The text of Burke’s letter to families has since been obtained by Patch.

In the letter, Burke said a parent brought a concern to the district’s attention, and the district contacted authorities and notified members of the school community who may have had contact with Rajala.

Burke said Rajala passed all required background checks when he was hired, including state and federal screenings and a Department of Children and Families review. Burke said nothing in those checks prevented him from being employed by the district.

The matter is now being reviewed by authorities, Burke said. The district cannot comment further because doing so could affect the integrity of that review, according to the letter.

Burke told families the district does not respond to rumors or social media posts when student safety issues are involved. Instead, she said, the district follows established procedures and works with the proper authorities.

“Our responsibility is to rely on facts, follow established procedures, cooperate with the proper authorities, and respond in a manner that protects students, families, staff, and the integrity of any review or investigation,” Burke wrote.

Burke said anyone with information or concerns about Rajala, or any other district employee, may contact her directly or the Granby Police Department.
