Family of 4 Displaced By Fire in East Granby

A police officer helped four people escape safely, but the family could not return home on Tuesday.

EAST GRANBY, CT — Firefighters from several departments responded to an early-morning house fire on Newgate Road Tuesday after a blaze broke out in an attached garage, town officials said.

The fire was reported shortly after 1 a.m. at a home on Newgate Road, between Wyncairne Drive and Copper Hill Road. Fire officials said the incident was initially dispatched as a residential structure fire.

A police officer arrived first and helped four people get out of the home safely. No injuries were reported.

When fire crews arrived, they were concerned the fire could spread from the garage into the house. As a precaution, firefighters performed exterior ventilation through the garage roof, according to East Granby Fire Chief Kerry Flaherty. He said the fire did not spread into the living areas of the home.

Despite that, smoke damage throughout the house made it temporarily uninhabitable. The family of four was forced to leave and will not be able to return on Tuesday, officials said.

Fire Marshal and Emergency Director Ken Beliveau said via email that it is unclear whether the family will be able to return before Christmas due to the smoke damage and because power to the home has been shut off. He said the family does have relatives in the area where they can stay.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including firefighters from the 103rd Airlift Wing, which confirmed its involvement in a social media post.

The East Granby Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
