Police ID Student Who Died After Granby Camp Incident
Granby police identified the student as a 14-year-old eighth grader.
GRANBY, CT — A 14-year-old Springfield, Massachusetts, student died Wednesday after he was pulled from a pool at High Meadow Day Camp in Granby, police said Thursday afternoon.
Granby police identified the student as Emari Marshall-Woodard, of Springfield. Police said he attended the Springfield School District and was in the eighth grade.
The incident happened Wednesday at High Meadow Day Camp, at 311 North Granby Road. Granby police said they were called at about 2:27 p.m. for a reported drowning.

A Simsbury police officer who was working at the camp went to the pool area and started helping the student, police said. Emari was then taken by Granby Ambulance to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where he died, according to police.
Granby police said Thursday afternoon that the incident remains under investigation.

High Meadow confirmed the death to WFSB, saying the eighth-grade boy had a medical emergency in the pool during a field trip and was taken by ambulance to a hospital before the camp learned he had died. Springfield Public Schools also confirmed to WFSB that one of its students was taken from High Meadow by ambulance.
Students from several Connecticut school districts were at High Meadow at the time, including Wethersfield, Vernon, Bloomfield and Windham, WFSB reported.
High Meadow Day Camp is located on Route 189 in North Granby and has offered day camp programs for children ages 3 through 15 since 1960, according to the camp’s website. The camp lists its address as 311 North Granby Road.
Several children later became upset after the incident, and ambulances from Granby, Windsor Locks, Simsbury and Suffield also went to the scene, police said.
Granby police said anyone who witnessed the incident and needs support can call 211 for crisis support services and other community resources.
