Winter Storm Targets Granby, East Granby: Latest Forecast, Cancellations, How To Prepare

Find out the latest snow accumulation estimates and timeline for the upcoming major winter storm from meteorologists.

GRANBY, CT Granby public works crews say they are fully staffed and prepared as a major winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow to interior Connecticut from Sunday into Monday, with forecasts calling for hazardous travel and plowable accumulations.

Town Preparedness And Operations

Granby Public Works Operations Manager Stuart Young said in an email that the department is ready for a prolonged storm, with equipment, staffing, and materials in place ahead of snowfall. Crews will operate continuously as conditions require throughout the event.

Granby currently has about 300 tons of salt on hand, which Young said will be sufficient to handle a multi-day storm without disrupting operations.

At peak operations, Granby expects to have 14 plow trucks on the road, along with two loaders equipped with plows and three smaller trucks handling plowing duties. A total of 19 operators will be assigned to plowing operations, supported by a sidewalk crew working throughout the storm to address pedestrian areas and town facilities.

Granby Town Hall will be closed until noon on Monday, Jan. 26, due to the expected winter storm, according to town officials.

How Residents Can Help Crews

Officials said the single most important thing residents can do is stay out of the way of plow trucks and give operators plenty of room on the road to safely do their jobs.

Town officials reminded residents that Granby has a standing ordinance prohibiting parking on town roads during any snow or ice event. Vehicles left on the roadway can interfere with plowing operations and slow down snow removal efforts.

Residents are asked to report true hazards, such as downed trees or impassable roads, by calling the Granby Police Department, which will contact DPW to respond to emergencies. For non-emergency issues, residents can contact Granby Public Works by phone or through the town’s online reporting portal.

National Weather Service Forecast

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for interior Connecticut from early Sunday through Monday afternoon. Forecasters say Granby and surrounding inland areas could see between eight and 15 inches of snow, with locally higher totals possible. Snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour at times, especially Sunday night, and travel is expected to be difficult due to hazardous road conditions and reduced visibility.

Local TV Meteorologists: Timing And Snow Totals

Local television meteorologists are largely aligned on the storm’s expected impact. WFSB says snow will begin late Sunday morning, intensify Sunday night, and taper off on Monday, with plowable snow likely and around a foot or more possible inland. WTNH is forecasting 12 to 15 inches of snow for inland Connecticut, with snow developing around 8 a.m. Sunday and ending Monday morning. NBC Connecticut says snow will move into the state from the south around midday Sunday, with 10 to 18 inches possible statewide depending on the storm’s final track. FOX61 reports it is still fine-tuning the forecast but says a foot or more of snow is increasingly likely across much of Connecticut.

Town officials urged residents to plan ahead, avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm, follow parking rules, and give plow crews space as they work to keep Granby roads passable.
