Greenwich Hit-and-Run Suspect Told Police He Hit Deer: Report

GREENWICH, CT- The teen accused of hit-and-run that left a 43-year-old Greenwich man dead initially told police that he hit a deer.

Andrew Schmidt appeared in court Thursday and is attempting to move his case to juvenile court, according to Greenwich Time.

Schmidt and friends spent the day in Armonk, N.Y. before returning to Greenwich on April 17. Witnesses said that Schmidt appeared to be driving fast at the time of the collision on East Putnam Avenue, according to court documents.

Victim Edward Setterberg's body was thrown 130 feet.

Schmidt, 17, was arrested on May 26. Police worked with the State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford-Norwalk to obtain a warrant, said Lt. Kraig Gray, police spokesman.

Schimidt is charged with evading responsibility following involvement in an accident that results in a fatality. The charge is a felony with a potential penalty of 10 years in prison.
